Jolanta Stokłosa

The hospice movement in Poland

Chair of the Society of Friends of the Sick ‘St Lazarus Hospice’ in Kraków (since 1994) and Chair of the Polish Hospice Forum (since 2007). She has been involved in the hospice movement since 1983—initially helping to prepare materials for volunteers, later serving as the society’s secretary and playing a key role in the construction of the hospice on Fatimska Street. The hospice provides inpatient and home care to over a thousand patients a year, mainly cancer patients, as well as operating a palliative care clinic. For many years, she has promoted hospice care as an alternative to euthanasia, emphasising holistic care for patients and their families. She has taught courses in palliative and hospice care at the Pontifical University of John Paul II (UPJPII). Among other honours, she has received the Gold Medal of Merit of the Pontifical University of John Paul II.
