Futility or therapy – what should be the essence of the dispute regarding the limits of treatment

Professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Medicine at the Medical University of Lublin and at the University of Applied Sciences in Tarnow. He holds a medical degree, a master’s degree in philosophy, and a doctorate in law. He is a specialist in public health as well as in orthopaedics and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system. He has served, among other roles, as head of the Department of Ethics and Medical Law and of the Chair of Social Medicine at the Medical University of Lublin. He has also served as dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. He has completed research fellowships in Spain (Deusto University, Bilbao) and the United States (School of Public Health, Harvard University), among other places. He is Vice President of the Polish Society for Spiritual Care in Medicine, a member of the Supreme Bioethics Commission and the Scientific Council of the Bioethics Centre of the Supreme Medical Council (NRL), as well as a member of international expert groups on ethical, legal, and social issues at BBMRI-ERIC (Biobanking and BioMolecular Research Infrastructure – European Research Infrastructure Consortium) and EUREC (European Network of Research Ethics Committees). In the past, he served as a member of the Transparency Council to the President of AOTMiT — Agency for Health Technology Assessment and Tariff System (2013–2023), as well as of expert and advisory teams supporting central government bodies in the Republic of Poland.
